Comic-Con began in San Diego in 1970 and was created to celebrate comics along with film, science fiction, fantasy literature and other popular arts.
HOW IT DEVELOPED
Event History
Comic-Con’s official history says the event used the El Cortez Hotel as its main home during much of the 1970s, moved to the Convention and Performing Arts Center in 1979, and moved to the San Diego Convention Center in 1991.

Comic-Con is historically rooted in San Diego. The organization’s official history documents its San Diego venues, and a 2026 agreement keeps Comic-Con in San Diego through 2030.
